The last XBox, the 360, was released some 7 years ago so the time is clearly ripe for a new one. We know there is one in the works, the much-talked about XBox 720 and, as launch time grows nearer the rumors are hotting up, in style and intensity. This latest one is apparently a leak about the supposed specs of the new games console and, if they are correct then we can expect to see something really quite special from Microsoft.
The report has come from VGLeaks and states that the new XBox 720 will have :
- 8-Core X64 CPU at 1.6GHz
- 8GB DDR3, coupled with 32MB fast embedded SRAM
- USB 3.0
- 50GB 6X Blu-Ray disc drive
Apparently each CPU thread will have its own 32KB L1 instruction and data caches. As far as the GPU goes, the leak points to a custom D3D11.1 class 800MHz graphics processor that has 12 shader cores, totaling 768 threads. Each of these threads will have the ability to
“perform one scalar multiplication and addition operation (MADD) per clock cycle” and, at top performance the GPU can “effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second.”
For the network we would expect to see Gigabit Ethernet or Wi-Fi/Direct at the very least. The leak also claims that there will be an NUI sensor built in, effectively allowing the Kinect system to be incorporated rather than as a separate peripheral – this will have an effect on games manufacturers, being able to use the motion-based technology without having to take into account that some didn’t use Kinect on the 360.
The final rumor, which should be taken lightly at this stage is that there will be an HDMI-in connection which, if there is would be a real bonus. What do you think? Does this sound like a games console you would be proud to own ?
