Oprah Winfrey is one of the worlds biggest television talk show hosts. She is outspoken and loved for it ; vivacious, very vocal and supposedly intelligent. So intelligent that she recently made a rather entertaining faux-pas. Oprah tweeted her love for the new Microsoft Surface tablet, claiming it be one of her favourites and that she has already purchased 12 of them as gifts for Christmas. Nothing wrong with that, except she used the Twitter app on her iPad.
This is just another blow to the gut of Microsoft. After spending a colossal $1.5 billion dollars on marketing the Surface Tablet, including drafting in several well-known celebrities including Gwen Stefani and Jessica Alba as well as Oprah herself to help promote it. The Surface Tablet was released as a rival to Apple’s iPad but has been dogged by bad reviews followed by the resignation of the head of the Windows Division.
Perhaps this is Oprah’s way of telling Microsoft that, whilst she is happy to endorse their products, they still have a long way to go to reach the standards set by Apple. But, it may also be telling them that the lack of apps on Windows RT will be their downfall. In fact, there are so few of them that clearly Oprah found it easier to use her iPad instead of having to manually find Twitter on the Surface and use it. There is no Twitter app available at the Windows store but on Apple and Google Play it is one of the most popular and widely downloaded. It seems that app developers are not happy about developing for the Windows store, despite Microsoft being one of the most used operating systems in the world.
Maybe we shouldn’t write off Windows RT quite so soon but without the developers queuing up to build the apps it will more than likely flounder before sinking without a trace.
