Things move very fast, both with the iOS and with jailbreaking and that makes it difficult to keep up. The speed at which Apple is releasing updates is hampering efforts by any jailbreak development team to produce anything useable and, those that have been demonstrated were almost immediately closed down when Apple patched the vulnerabilities used. The teams we have always been able to rely on have disappeared without a trace leaving us pinning our hopes on any developer, no matter who they are, producing a safe, stable jailbreak that we can all use.
We have seen such a jailbreak recently; it was demonstrated by Alibaba Pandora Labs not a well-known jailbreak name, and it is just what we want – fully untethered, giving users root access. The problem is, they aren’t going to be releasing it publicly, not yet anyway and that could be down to a few reasons. Many developers tinker with firmware just to see if they can jailbreak it but they don’t always have the means to take it widescale. Others do it to find the vulnerabilities and report them to Apple in the hopes of being paid, quite generously, for their trouble.
This is down to Apple’s Bug Bounty program, a program that will pay up to $200,000 for each vulnerability that is reported to them. Once reported, Apple usually produces a fix for it in a future version of the iOS firmware but that means that vulnerability can still be used up to that point – there is always the chance of a jailbreak being released for an earlier iOS version than the current one.
Right now, we are at a stage where anything can happen. We know that jailbreaks are few and far between and we are unlikely to see an iOS 11.2.5 jailbreak anytime soon. However, there is always the chance of a utility being released for an earlier iOS so, unless you have to, don’t update your devices.
