For those of you who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6, you’ll have to wait a little longer. Recently, a one-hour-long video was uploaded to YouTube by Hack in the Box Security. It shows a discussion between iOS hackers pod2g, musclenerd and planetbeing, alongside Mark Dowd of Azimuth Security. The main topic of conversation was the untethered jailbreak.
According to Mark Dowd, one of the reasons it is proving difficult to produce the jailbreak is because Apple have beefed up security on their iOS 6 kernel. Whilst Mark has had Cydia running on iOS 6, it is a “failbreak” rather than a “jailbreak“. This means that it is only available to developers and wont be heading in the direction of the general public anytime soon. Pod2g is apparently working on it as we speak and is hoping to have news soon.
Other topics discussed include the Apple TV 3 jailbreak, or lack of which is due to problems in finding an A5 bootrom exploit, and the apparent dry spell of unlock software appearing on the market. This has been attributed to the overwhelming amount of vendors offering factory unlock services at a cheap price. Factory unlocks are permanent whereas jailbreak unlocks can be undone when the phone updates software.
As far as the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 is concerned, it’s a case of watch this space and wait for updates. People are being warned to steer clear of websites claiming to have the untethered version as they are fakes.
