This tutorial will be useful for those who rely on Ultrasn0w or Gevey Sim based unlock .

Note : This tutorial will not jailbreak your iPhone 4 . Redsnow 0.9.9b5 was not available for Windows at the time of writing this tutorial . Windows users can use Snowbreeze iOS 5 Upgrade Tutorial to preserve baseband.

Steps to Upgrade iPhone 4 to iOS 5 :

  1. Download iOS 5 ipsw

  6. Now browse to the iOS 5 ipsw downloaded in Step 1
  7. Allow Redsn0w to process the custom firmware .
  8. After the firmware is create you to select Pwned DFU button to proceed and restore to custom firmware created before .
  9. Redsnow will now ask you to put your device into DFU mode . For that you have to press and hold both home and power buttons for 10 seconds and release power button and keep holding home button for another 10 seconds . This will put your device in DFU mode . Redsnow will now do its work and put your phone on Pwned DFU mode .
  10. Launch iTunes and it will now see your device is in recovery mode . Press OPTION button on Mac / SHIFT button on Windows keyboard and select Restore and browse to the new IPSW file created above .

hey I have the same problem. I follow the guide, but when i put it in to DFU mode and restore with the new custom IPSW in my iTunes. A window pops saing: your device is not ineligible for 5.0

  5. Derek says:

Same thing happened….maybe we need an original carrier’s SIM for it to work..?

  6. Siba says:

Hallo, it is possible to return to firmware 04.10.01 after an update to 04.11.08 ???
    Tank You!

    • funtoosh says:

No, u can’t go back once u have upgraded ur baseband

    • Gp says:

try restoring to 4.3.5 stock firmware. The signing window for 4.10.01 was open till yesterday so Chances r u might get ur old BB back. Try & give feedback.

    • Anthony says:

Yes can downgrade! I did! I upgraded to ISO 5 before I read all the details of the new OS. I didn’t Know the new IOS 5 changed the BB as well :( I thought I turned my iPhone into a $500 paperweight ;-) However I did manage to downgrade again, (Please note: I saved my SHSH File before I upgraded) and got my Gevey sim working again. I then followed this procedure to preserve my BB and install the cooked IPSW file. I’m now running ISO 5 with Modem Firmware 04.10.01. My phone is locked to Rogers Canada, But with the help of the Gevey Sim, I’m using a DTAC sim in Thailand as of now. Things to note: 1. I think it’s important to Mod your HOST file, before you can downgrade or even install the cooked IPSW file which is not mention in this procedure. 2. for anyone using a Gevey to unlock their phone, I got mime working fine, in a very short time, But I never did get the 1Bar thing. It just went like “NO SERVICE” to 5 bars of service! I had to play with the Airplane Mode quite a bit though.

  7. Annoyed says:

Spent close to 12 hours trying to get my Verizon iPhone 4 jailbroke. I’ve been doing this a while and this was the most difficult time ive ever had. Really though once I figured it out. It shouldn’t have taken more than ten minutes. Seams like a lot of the problems are caused by iTunes. UNHOOK ALL EXTRA USB DEVICES!!! I probably received 20 different error codes and tried every jailbreak tool I could think of. Nothing worked. I unhooked my printer and external hard drive restarted my computer and it worked first try….. It always ends up being something simple!!

    • dano26 says:

I have a verizon phone too and I was wondering if I had to update my phone to ios 5.0.1 before I jailbreak? I read a shit ton of articles showing me how to preserve my bb and ran into the error that itunes says “you firmware is not compatible” at the custom restore step…So should I just update and then just jaibreak? Also what is your baseband now? I really don’t want to make a mistake and end up not being able to jailbreak or downgrade back to my 4.2.8 firmware.

  8. Mehdi says:

I did this, and my gevey sim works on iOS 5, but i don’t have anymore Personal Hotspot ! even in cellular data network there is no personal hotspot configuration, there are just the cellular data and MMS ! howcan i solve this problem ?

    • Gp says:

This problem was observed by me also.
There is no solution as of now.
The problem is , earlier there was “Unknown” carrier bundle in carrier bundles list on iphone. It was for the folks who uses there phone on roaming while travelling to other countries.
with iOS 5 update Apple just removed that bundle & now it is causing problem.

Just go into setting – & click on reset network setting once.
It did not work for me but might work for u.

      • ronak says:

hey GP …i have got some help from you in past and that have worked. so this time i would again like to ask you that.. i am on 4.3.5 iphone 4. at&t.(currently unlocked using gevey sim) when i tried to restore and update from 4.1 to 4.3.5 it used to show that the iphone is not elegible for the requested build up. and then i upgraded directly from itunes apple via that update pop up it worked perfectly. Now i have to upgrade to ios 5 preservilg my base brand so that i can unlock via gevey sim so after hearing some peoples comment that they are facing the same problem so i am worried that while upgrading my iphone to ios5 preserving my basebrand i may too face the same problem which will leave my iphone to recovery mode. need ur help on this GP. reply soon.

      • ronak says:

hey GP…upgraded to ios 5 but personal hotspot not working there is no option.. tried resetting network settings then to its not working.. need help on this as i use my ipad on iphone’s network.

  10. Vikram says:

Hi, sorry to jump in here,

it seems like everyone is succeeding at upgrading to ios 5.0 and preserving their baseband at 04.10.01 or earlier. I’ve been trying and keep running into ‘unknown error 11′ in itunes. anyone have this issue or know of a fix?

ps. i read that this error has something to with an extracted baseband file within the ‘custom’ ispw that im trying to restore to.

  11. Vikram says:

I’m using the same , but the problem still persists.
The custom ipsw in simple mode is made , but after entering the dfu mode, during the restore process , This ERROR 11 pops up.
Not able to get throug at all.
Any suggestions? Been sitting on this all morning .
    Thank u

  12. Gman says:

iTunes says” This iPhone could not be restored. This device is not eligible for selected build” Any one can help?

    • ronak says:

I am worried about the same problem as i have faced the same problem while upgrading from 4.1 to 4.3.5..!

  13. Annoyed says:

I had all these problems yesterday. I was getting so many different error codes that I wasn’t sure what to do so I was trying everything. Finally I took all extra USB devices off of my computer. Restarted it and did a shift restore with ios 5 and my iPhone 4 Restored immediately. Idk why…..like I said I was getting so many different errors I wasn’t sure what to do. The redsnow jailbreak was simple. Only took a few minutes. I spent over 8 just trying to get iOS 5 on to my phone so I could begin the jailbreak… Idk if that will work for you but it did for me. Good luck

  14. Mateusz says:

The servers from apple have problems

  15. dmis says:

  16. Mateusz says:

Buy a prepaid sim Or hacktivate if posible

  17. Annoyed says:

I think a lot of it probably is apples servers. I noticed it was taking forever when I was downloading and running the programs. Idk. It’s frustrating though……

  18. Mateuszmat says:

Here in europe they write that the apple servers have problems.

  19. ronak says:

    Guys working perfectly…
finally upgraded iphone 4 to ios 5 preserving base brand and unlocked using gevey sim.. works just perfect..
would like to say something about the problem or request build up during upgrade
Before upgrade insert your official sim card and reset all settings on your phone and after that make sure you have put your iphone into DFU mode correctly.. it should work out..A risk worth taking for ios5.

If it worked before the upgrade, it should still work again after you upgrade to ISO 5 with (the Preserve BB) I had a hard time getting my Gevey Sim working after the upgrade as well. I never did get the one bar thing, (after I got Gevey Screen) like before just “no service” and after that I just kept turning my “plane mode” off and then on, (right away) and finally I got service! Good LucK!

I want to upgrade my iPhone 4 from iOS 4.1 (8B117) to iOS 5 but want to keep the option of jailbreaking in the future. Should I use Snowbreeze to update so that the baseband is preserved? Current baseband is 02.10.04.

  38. rigs says:

hi there, I made step by step and it was working
then when it finished installing ios5 on the iphone, it rebooted and started with a setup o activation something (language, region, enable current location, turn on wifi) saying that my SIM was not right (I use gevey sim) that I needed a compatible one.
Now it doesn`t event turn on…

    • Anthony says:

Hi Rigs, did you save your old Baseband? Because if you upgraded to the Stock ISO 5 direct from Apple it will change your Baseband to a version that can not be un-locked by the Gevey Sim. You need to preserve the your old Baseband before you up-grade.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

      • boobby says:

    Hello Everyone,
As usual i also upgrade my iphone 4 to IOS 5 and it also upgraded my base band can anyone tell me its solution or when it will be resolve any idea?

  49. James says:

I get an error saying, BE WARNED! If you restore stock apple firmware, your baseband can and likely will be updated. how do i ensure this wont happen, and is it safe to jail break while in a contract with a service provider. I’m with optus. I jsut want to make sure it will still function correctly on the network, and not be unlocked or anything.

    Thanks James.

  50. jacktdurden says:

Hey guys, I have a kinda unique problem.,I’m using an older Gevey sim, and anytime I am forced to turn off the phone, or simply reboot it, it sometimes takes as many as 50-70 tries to get the phone to recognize the Gevey before I can re-unlock it again. Am I in need of a New Gevey sim card? Is there something wrong with my Iphone? It’s terribly frustrating!! Help!!

    • Anthony says:

Hey Jackdurden, I own two Gevey sims (The Ultra and the Supreme) and I find them both are hard to unlock my iPhone at times. Sometimes I can unlock it in a few tries and other times it can take me up to a couple of hours trying. Right now I’m primarily use the Supreme Sim as I find that one to be the better of the two. With the Supreme Sim installed, I can at least turn my iPhone, (or “airplane mode”) off and on again and the iPhone will find the network on it’s own, (most times) without having go through the unlocking steps again. With the Gevey Ultra sim, I’ve found if I turn either my iPhone or AP mode off and on, I would have to go through the unlock procedure every time! (What a pain ;( Anyways I think you may have to play with your Network settings. What I found that works for me, (whenI have trouble unlocking) is I make sure my 3G is off and my “Cellular Data Network” is on. I found the “Data Roaming” didn’t matter, (on or off). Another thing found is that I often have to play with the “Airport Mode” Selecting it on and off many times and getting the “Invalid Sim” (many times) before I get any bars showing up. I don’t think the Gevey Sim unlock procedure is an exact science. You have to play with the settings and see what works for you. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

      • jacktdurden says:

Hey thanks for responding to my query, I didn’t think I was the only one out there having issues with it! I know now to just not shut it off unless absolutely necessary and it’s fine as long as I don’t. Good luck with yours too!
