iPhone 4 can be unlocked on iOS 5 firmware if you can preserve your baseband during the upgrade process. You can check your original baseband by going to the following location on your iOS device .
Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware

Method 1 : Ultrasn0w Unlock :
Ultrasnow unlock users can unlock their device ( iPhone 4 , iPhone 3GS ) using the latest release of Ultrasn0w available on Cydia .
Steps to Unlock using Ultrasn0w :
- First Upgrade to iOS 5 by preserving baseband
- Now Jailbreak your iPhone 4 on iOS 5
- Launch Cydia and go to Manage tab the select Sources
- Select Edit and click on Add button at the top
- Add the following source http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com
- After the source is added and package downloaded from the internet you can Search and install Ultrasn0w 1.2.4as shown below
- Your device is now unlocked . You can use any sim card with your iPhone .
Note : iPhone 3GS users baseband 06.15.00
Here’s a special “trick” that iPhone 3GS owners with baseband 06.15 need for iOS5. During the new setup screens you see when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services. Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked! Later on in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”. It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).
Method 2 : Gevey Sim Unlock :
It has been confirmed that those on modem baseband 04.10.01 can still unlock their iPhone 4 using Gevey Sim . Follow the Gevey Sim Unlock on iOS 5 technique for more details .

What basebands will this work on? ….Does upgrading to iOS5 upgrade the baseband to 01.59.00?
01.59.00 is the first baseband ever released. 4.3.5 had 04.10.01 baseband …. iOS 5 has even higher baseband

I am currently using iphone4 for the past 6 months, with 4.3.3, BB- 4.10.01 and unlocked with Gevey in India,originally locked to AT&T,(US).
I want to know
1) whether i need my original AT&T sim in any of the steps to upgrade from 4.3.3 to ios5 as i do not have my original sim now.
2) Whether i need to jailbreak my iPhone before or after the upgradation as i do not want to jailbreak.
3) Will i have to connect my iPhone to pc every time i switch it Off and On.

1) yes, you will need original AT&T sim card to activate your iPhone.
2)no, you do not have to jailbreak your device, just download sn0wbreeze 2.8b8 and click there preserve badeband and your baseband won’t upgrade
3) no you won’t need, you need to connect your phone to pc only if you do tethered jailbreak.

1) no,you dont need original AT&T sim card to activate becouse snowbreeze will hacktivate it for you.

1) i think snowbreeze has an option to hacktivate phone.
DEEP isn’t sure what he is talking about. Snowbreeze only creates an ISPW so you can preserve your baseband, jailbreaking is only an option (you have to use redsn0w to do that).

It works, I’ve done it for a couple friends. Once you upgrade to ios5 you have to toggle with airplane mode for a bit to get service to be available
So its an untethered jailbreak or??
no its not jailbreak , just upgrade . the jailbreak process is tethered however

I do the same but, my iphone is form at$t ,after jailbreak I have to use at$t sim to start the phone , then replays with my sim form location operator together with gevey sim
Since the latest version of redsn0w is not available for windows, and windows users cannot create the custom firmware with redsn0w, can someone upload the custom firmware for iphone 4? Would that work just the same?

I just upgrade my iphone4 from ios 4.3.5 to ios 5 with bb upgrade 04.11.08 and jaibreak with ultrasnow 1.2.4 by using redsn0w_win_0.9.9b4; It looked like OK, becauce I did not have another sim to test it. Use redsn0w_win_0.9.9b4 and following the step. Thanks to all the team to make the softwares and the website.

I have a few things to mention about my experience with this unlock process.
I have an iPhone 4 iOS 5 with bb 04.10.01 (did the whole upgrade by preserving the bb ON A WINDOWS PC )
My ultimate goal is to unlock my iPhone but the process mentioned here does not support my phone’s baseband! WTF?
Why would it say it unlocks iOS 5 w/ bb 04.10.01 when the cydia source app (repo666) does not currently have an unlock that supports iPhone 4 with bb 04.10.01!!!
(then what the hell is the point of upgrading to iOS 5 preserving the older basband when it doesn’t even support it?
I tried using the Gevey sim ultra but guess what? Its a tethered jailbreak so that means that whenever you insert it and turn off phone, you must go into DFU mode with redsn0w and hope to God it works. (it doesn’t, i tried and a lot [like 20 hrs])
If anyone knows a better way to unlock on iOS 5 for iPhone 4 PLEASE RESPOND!
try gevey sim [non ultra] . Ultrasn0w works only and only on 01.59.00 .

iOS 4.3.5 with 04.10.01 Gevey sim Ultra capable of unlocking
iOS 5 with bb 01.59.00 unlockable…

For the past one year I have been waiting for someone to develop unlock for iphone 4.1 baseband 02.10.04 without Gevey sim, but now I have given up hope so I would like to know if any unlocks are available for any higher basebands? I can’t downgrade but will upgrading help?
I have been dealing with a similar problem but let’s face it,m if we want the unlock we need to use a gevey sim that will work on a base band. So there’s one solution and one only for you. All can be done through google search.
1. You will need iTunes 10.4 (old itunes)
2. IPSW for 4.3.5 search it in google since apple still signs it.
3. Put phone into DFU mode and sync with old itunes and shift+restore to ipsw 4.3.5
4. guaranteed: phone will have now 04.10.01

Has anyone tried the unlock with BB 01.59.00 yet? I am really interested in trying, but would say I am only “OK” at troubleshooting, so a little nervous to trail and error it.
i work for a wireless company ( other than at&t)0 and just today funny enough I had a guy come in with an iphone 4 iOS 5 with a bb 1.59.00 (jailbroken iphone with ultrasn0w unlock)
Gave him our carrier sim and worked like wonders.
I say yeah, go for it.
Just NEVER update with itunes if you’re using a stock IPSW! Always use a custom made IPSW that does not update your BASE BAND!
EVEN if you mess up the unlock and ur phone gets stuck ALWAYS use redsn0w to get urself out of that state. don’t worry your phone will be fine

I have iphone4, bb 02.10.04, upgraded it iOS 5 with preserving bb, as in this post.
Than had an error 3194, when was restoring, fixed it by changing line in hosts at windows 32
Than had to activate iPhone, couldn’t get through that thing with sliding tree fingers at the right moment) but luckily found old att sim and activated using it. But I live in Russia, do I need unlock, I was using gevey before (always worked fine) and I had difficulties unlocking after all of these steps. But I did at the end and loving new software!! (gevey- switch on the phone, go to settings, do on/off airmode, for 4 secs, might need 2-3 times, than chiny thing will pop out, wait 15 secs, allow, do on/off airmode, (normally signal bar would appear, but now doesnt) so go to calls, dial 112 and hang, right away go to settings switch on airmode till the MSG with mistake appear, ok it, off airmode, 2 secs on/off for 2sec, now carrier will pop out in the list and it will start search for carrier) wait about 30 secs (if wont find do on/off air again for few secs)

Your way too long with Gevey. I am having I4 4.3.3 4.10.01 and What I just turn phone on, go to homescreen, wait about 5-19 sec, then the black screen pop up, accept, then dil 112 for 2 sec, turn off airplain mode on, wait around 10 sec, message will pop up,No sim card inserted. Then hit OK, turn off AirPlane. Then Right away see 2 pop up messages( don’t remember 1st,) 2nd saying Invalid Simcard. But don’t tap anything, it will go off. and after 5 sec have my bars. If I don’t have blackscreen at the beginning, Just reboot device.

and YES you can upgrade to iOS 5 without upgrading the baseband (use ultrasnow custom IPSW or other program to download it). BUTTTTTTT the redsnow jailbreak is only tethered. Keep reading my posts on this web page and you’ll see all the answers

So I have my IPhone 4 that I want to unlock/activate, so that it accepts any sim card. I’ve tried various of things, with redsn0w, snowbreeze, greenpois0n, iReb, Tiny umbrella, with various of different firmwares, but I think I might be doing something wrong as it doesn’t go through for some reason. The iPhone has iO S 5, I’ve tried to downgrade it and, (been trying to jailbreak it to 4.2.1), but I keep getting iTunes errors or the jailbreak process stopping somewhere..
Usually the itunes errors are the 3194 (which I can get around using Tinyumbrella) and then I get 2005 error and the solution for that is said to be to restart the laptop, switch usb ports, I’ve done all that, even tried with several different computers.
Any firmware version is fine for me, as long as it accepts any sim-card. Please help
I’ve had 4.3.3 on my iPhone 4 BB 3.10.01 and everythig works just fine. After I updated to iOS 5 and preserved my BB, everything works, except my Gevey SIM interposer. I saved my SHSH. files so i can go back to 4.3.3 any time I want. Any idea?

your phone is working fine because you are on ATT. and after Jailbreaking, you dont need ultrasnow. As long you have ATT service, your phone will work

Doesn’t the baseband stay the same once you upgrade? So won’t it stay 04.11.08?
You can downgrade baseband only if u updated it on beta iOS 5..
