I upgrade my iphone4 to ios5 unknowingly without saving the Bsaeband. Currently I am stuck with ios5 and fromware 4.11.8. Is there any solution for this? My phone was dead for the past 3 months.

    • Allan says:

My best suggestion to you is go pre-paid. No contracts, month to month. No worries.

I am using H2O wireless, great plans, and it works with locked iPhones, because they use AT&T network.

Give it a try, I’ve been using it since July with no issues.

      Good luck

I have an iPhone 4 (BB 4.10.1), IOS 4.3.5 (BL1), and currently using te Gevey Sim because I use several SIM cards. Do you recommend to make this jailbreak / unlock?, there are no risks that I could no go back to use of Gevey later on?

    • Gabo says:

Any iPhone 4 with baseband 1.59.00 (ONLY) will be able to be unlocked without a Gevey SIM.
If you want to update preserving baseband you might be able to keep unlocking it with you Gevey Sim (as long as it is the Gevey Pro or the Gevey Supreme)…

      • kajol says:

currently my iphone have 4.3.5 with 4.10.1 unlocked with gevey supreme. if i update it to 5.0.1 by preserving baseband will i able to use gevey supreme for it’s unlock solution?

        thanks

      • Rachit says:

@Kajol- yeah if u preserve the baseband u will b able to use it with Gevey.

I’ve been on iOS 4.3.3 since May or June and haven’t upgraded to 5 because I use Gevey Ultra to unlock my phone and I know that FuriousMod hasn’t been working on tethered jailbreak ios 5 devices even with preserved baseband, but when the Untethered JB releases would Gevey Ultra also be able to retain its untethered unlock function?

  16. Andy says:

Comming very soon for bb 4.11.08 this fill days to unlock the iphone

  17. adriano says:

My recommendation to all who got bb 4.11.08 like myself , since you have iPhone paid
for, activate it whit ATT whit no contract then when the unlock is figure out go back and cancel the plan. Theres no penalties for cancelation once you have the iPhone . I did it , at least I have my iPhone working.

  18. Samare says:

I purchased iPhone 4 (Carrier: carrier Lab 11.0; Model: MC318LL; Modem firmware : 04.11.08) supplied with original ios 4.3.5 (AT&T ) and Gevey SIM through ebay. But by mistake it was upgraded to version: 5 .0.1 (9A405). Original iOS 4.3.5 was not saved. Can I retrieve the original iOS? Now I am stocked and cannot unlock phone using the Gevey sim. Your help will be much appreciated.

You all can keep waiting for years.. after 1.59.00 no developer will unlock the phone.. so its a brick.. buy android works all over the world.. I have several iphone 4 heavy bricks.. Iphone is heavy and does not work..

  22. Thug dizzle says:

Will sumone please tell me why only one baseband on iphone 4 is unlockable ?? Well time to find sumone that can take the time to find unlocks for the rest of the iphone 4s.

    • Chriss says:

That will not happen. No one is working on any unlock for any BaseBand on any past, present or future iPhone. It is not only illigal, but is also followed up by quite severe penalties, so why would anybody even think about it?
1.59 was unlocked, in part by Apple itself, because at that time, there where no factory unlocked iPhones available anywhere in the world (except Belgium, but at moon prices) and thats also the reason why the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS where unlocked, always about 6month after they apeared, there was a lot of contact between Apple and the hackers. Apple was bound to contracts that gave exclusive rights in every country to one provider, if you moved country, went on hollydays or simply wanting to change the provider, it was not possible. So Apple helped a bit.
By summer 2010 those contracts ran out, when the iPhone 4 came on the market, there where still some on, so the then BaseBand 1.59 was given free but only to very few phones, the first charge to be exact. So, the summer came, new iPhones, now everywhere you could buy unlocked iPhones, came with the 2.10 BaseBand and Apple did not cooperate anymore with the so called dev-teams. Some people, even very prominent people from the hacker szene, where actually hired by Apple, some of the nice features in iOS5 are coming from that.
Since you can buy free phones everywhere in the world now, unlocking a subsidized iPhone would mean simple theft from the provider and since it means to break a protected software, you get punished by the patriot act and believe me, you do not want HLS knocking on your door.
      Its simply not worth it.
So, if you have a locked phone with a BaseBand other then 1.59, use the provider you got it with or sell it and get a free phone or a subsidized one with a provider of your choice, do not try to defraud companys, they really can get angry.
      Explanation enough?

  23. Thug dizzle says:

Show where it says its illegal ? I did my research and its only apple n att that hsve the probs ! Considering now u have companies that offer jzs sims for any unlocked android windows blackberry etc..

  24. Chriss says:

You did research that says, stealing is ok? Apple got no problem with unlocks, why? AT&T has, because they pay Apple nearly $600 for a phone they sell to you for $199. You agree by buying it for that price, to pay for two years a certain sum for the contract so AT&T makes there money back.
You are in breach of that contract if you use it with any other provider. You can simply buy the unlocked phone at full price.
Every Provider, not only AT&T, got a problem with that because its there money any unlocker steals. Apple got there money, no worries.

Apple got a problem with jailbraekers, not with unlockers. But jailbreaking is legal, all Apple can (and will) do is, to refuse the warranty. Jailbreakers that have a broken phone and can not restore it anymore to the nonjailbroken state, are out of luck. But even if a phone got restored to get a repair, we can see in most cases that it was jailbroken, a restore will not erase any evidence.

To also answer your question, in the US, but in other countries as well, it is illegal to tamper with protected software for that you got no licence and no property. All you have is a right to use the software for the duration of your contract, the provider lock is NOT part of the OS. It belongs to the providers and you agreed to the terms by activating it.

  25. Thug dizzle says:

U must b the guy that protects apple. So apple has no prob with unlockers but they locked to network. And apple has a problem with jailbreakers which is legal. Honestly smart guy i csn care less if they offer the unlock for iphone 4 i can pay my bill but since ur apple n atts representive. Ur telling me apple supports unlocking but friwns on jailbreaks. Funny att will give u unlock codes for all phones but iphone and apple wont give it out neither. But i sent in a jailbroke iphone 4 and they replaced it with a new phone smart guy !!

  26. Chriss says:

I can not quite understand what you are saying, but you obviously did not understand the facts. Apple is NOT locking any phone, the providers do that, got nothing to do with Apple.
Thats why Apple could not care less about any unlock, as they got there money already.
That AT&T is not giving the unlock code is also not Apples fault but AT&T decision, after all, you did buy the phone from AT&T, not from Apple who is only the manufacturer who sold the phone to AT&T and they sold it to you.
If you buy in the Apple Store, you are clearly told that this phone will only work with a AT&T contract. If you disagree to that, DO NOT BUY IT! Its that simple. Buy it with Sprint or Verizon. They all give you good deals, depending of where you live.
T-mobile is no option really, since there network is not comparable and there data is not working. Thats why they do not sell the phone.

  27. Gabo says:

How come that apple hires hackers????
So, apple is hiring ppl who does illegal stuff??
What, who or where is the illegal part then???

    • Chriss says:

Yes, apple did hire hackers. And why not? What has hacking to do with illegality?
You are confusing jailbreakers, app devellopers (also for jailbreak apps) and BaseBand crackers. One got nothing to do with the other.
When you read here or elsewhere about an immenent jailbreak for iOS5, NONE of the hackers will promise any unlock. They would be mad to do that and would gain absolutely nothing but hassle.
The jailbreak however gets them money, after all, everyone has to live and cydia is not free. And Mr.Freeman has a fundamental interest to get a jailbreak out.
Some might be disapointed as Freeman (Saurik) wants to ban Installous and Crackolous, basically prohibiting the theft of apps. In doing so, he hopes to look better in the long run, as at the moment 99% of jailbreakers want just one thing, free apps. That was never the idea behind the project but has taken over.
Lets wait and see, the teathered jailbreak for dual core devices is expected by the end of January, over 50% of iOS5 devices will have a dual core by then.
The iPhone 4S and the iPad2 are doing remarkably well, we can sometimes not get enough stock in as these things fly out the store. And they seem to work just fine without jailbreak, as there is none until now. I really wonder what all this talk about the crisis is all about, it is not looking like any crisis here (Barcelona,Spain)

      • Charles says:

        Nicely put Chriss.

        Time to do some homework to see if I can upgrade/jailbreak/unlock my current 4 on 4.3.3 & 1.59 to 5.0.1. . .

If I cannot find the answer by reading the various pages (and pages) of info, I’ll ask here.

        Happy 2012 everybody

      • Chriss says:

If you got a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone4 with BB 1.59, you can upgrade to 5.0 or 5.01 by preserving your BB. Once upgraded you can then jailbreak your phone, however, atm there is only a teathered jailbreak available and that will stay so for some time. So, the question is, if its worth it for you to have iOS5 heavely restricted, since you can only unlock with a teathered jailbreak, VERY inconvenient on the go when you might need your phone, to make a call for instant…….

You can wait for the unteathered jailbreak, we estimated until now for the end of January, but more likely in March, as the userland exploit proposed atm is already patched in 5.1, coming in a couple of weeks.
One things for sure, it gets more and more difficould, especially if you like to stay half way up to date.

  28. Tony says:

Why are you people asking the same question over and over…
Chriss is trying to help us , telling us not to put your phone into a jailbreak state cus YOU will loss your unlock with those who have been using Gervy sims, unless you do it the wright way.
People here have no idear on what there doing but still they continue trying to jailbreak/unlock Iphone.
    Dickheads .

  29. Garadee says:

Regarding my iphone4 it bb 3.10.01, now i am having this phone in long time, i am using a gevy sim, but i need to unlock it, how can unlock this bb phone????

    • Chriss says:

You will not be able to unlock it, ever, if it is a AT&T phone. If its from anywhere else in the world, request the unlock code from your provider, depending how long the contract is already running, you have to pay from between $200 to nothing (out of contract)

    • gm says:

not availabe at this time. but if im not mistaken you can unlock on ios 4.3.3

  30. EDU says:

please i want to unlock, my iphone 4 with modem firmware of 04.11.08 and version of 5.0.1, so that i can be able to use it in any network.please advice me, please plsaes…..

  31. Subhan says:

I have iPhone 3GS with iOS 5.0.1 and bb 5.16.05 I know that the only solution to unlock it with ultra snow is by updating its bb to 6.15.0 or iPad baseband but how?plz help me I am stuck with this by the day of release of ios5 then5.01 .my iPhone is jailbroken . Plz help me plz I’ll wait for reply.

  32. MaxXxFlame says:

Hey, what baseband will my iphone 4 be once i update it to 5.0.1?
    I am currently on 4.2.1 baseband 03.10.01

  33. Wimpie says:

Hi, I have an iPhone 4 with 4.11.08, I live in sa and use a provider here, I’m not planining on using another service provider, can my phone be jailbroken and still work on their network? I’m kinda new to this so please don’t leave just a yes or no, please tell me why.

And please don’t tell me that it’s ileagal and you wont help me, rather understand that I am paying 8 times or more for stuff than any one in the US. This phone cost me 8k so I would appreciate it if I can costimize it a little.

    Thanx in advance

    • Joe says:

      Hi Wimpie,
yes it can be jailbroken as there is a new version of redsnow that is now available (redsn0w_mac_0.9.10b1.zip), although our friend criss said this would only come in March! And no for the moment it cannot be unlocked if you have bought a locked phone (for 8K rand you could probably have bought a unlocked provider free phone) The unlocking is in my opinion a matter of time, although our friend criss says it will never happen , but then he also said the jailbreak would only be available probably in March.

      • Chriss says:

I stand by that. First, this jailbreak is NOT for dual core devices and it is userland for 5.01 only, and that means you can not update or downgrade. And the unlock got nothing to do with that, no BB since 1.59 (nearly two years ago) has been unlocked and there is no indikation whats so ever that that will change.

I know however already that loads of people will come to the shop tomorrow because they messed there devices up. As always.

Did you try this jailbreak? Did you already notice some changes? You will, very soon, especially if you use apps like dictation, face time, skype ect.

        Good luck

Btw, since when is a high price for a device the excuse to be alowed to steal it? If something is in your eyes too expensive, you think you have the right to simply take it instead to get a nother device that is cheaper?

      • Nico says:

Wimpy. I bought my iphone 4 directly from USA long before it was even on show in SA. My phone is AT&T locked. I bought GEVEY SIM and now I am using it world wide with any service provider. (BB 02.10.04) Don’t waste your time with all these jailbreaks and unlocks. I’ve wasted a lot of money by purchasing these so called unlocks and none worked. It is now jailbreaked, but still locked. GEVEY SIM is the only answer to my knowledge.

      • Wimpie says:

Thanx for all the replies so far, I just want to make sure about 1 thing, since I have my phone on a MTn contract at the moment, will it still work on the mtn network after its jailbroken, or should I just make a backup on iTunes and restore it with that if it doesn’t work?

        @Chris

      • Wimpie says:

Thanx Joe & Nico for all the help so far, I just want to make sure about 1 thing, since I have my phone on a MTn contract at the moment, will it still work on the mtn network after its jailbroken, or should I just make a backup on iTunes and restore it with that if it doesn’t work?

        @Chris
I haven’t said anything about stealing, just that I would like to be able to customize it more, I already paid for it in full, so what am I stealing, it’s kinda like buying a new car and having to pay extra to get the security code to listen to the radio. So far all I read from your comments is that your not interested in helping people, just to moan about what they are doing.

Ps: A free app or 2 won’t hurt either, why is it that you only have to pay for what’s app on the iPhone?

      • Chriss says:

@Wimpy, sorry, you missunderstand me. If you paid the full price, then you have no problems, you can jailbreak it and enjoy your costomisations because your phone is faktory unlocked, you never have to worry about any unlocks.
If however the provider paid for your phone and you want to unlock it so you can use another provider, then its what the provider and the police call fraud, you are stealing the phone.
After you fullfilled your contract, normally 18month to two years, your provider will give you the unlock code anyway and all is fine.
Also, trying to get paid apps for free is not nice towards the develloper, whould you like to work for free? So why do you expect others to do so?
I help people all day, after all, I work in a service center for Apple here in Barcelona. We opened 1h ago and have already no way of coping with the people that messed up there devices last night. Even if the jailbreak worked, there are numerous issues, notably in the operating speed of the phones, droped network connections (the old BB 1.59 is not working too well with OS5.01) iMessage not responding, viber not working, the dreaded yellow triangle for overheat, home button not responding or wrongly responding, DFU loops, ota sync problems, cydia endless looping or not installing at all, just to name a few
But the majority of phones (and iPods, most of the devices are iPods) just sits with a black screen or the Apple logo, is not responding at all anymore, is not recognised by iTunes anymore und brought a lot of people to tears.

I moan about unlocks, the illegal ones, not the operator ones, the jailbreak is everyones own risk. But you must be pretty desperate if you run to the Apple Store because the Gevey is not working anymore or your device is just not ressponding at all anymore. If your home botton is gone you can not get into DFU anymore or not out anymore.

Look at the 200plus posts for the last few hours here, nearly 80% with problems. It is not smooth sailing.

      • Arsu says:

        @chris
Why AT&T doesnt unlock your iPhone after 2 years contract period??why is that try still want people to use their service..

      • Chriss says:

That is true and very unfortunate, like all things in the US this is probably best solved with a class A suit, on there own AT&T is not going to give up.
In the rest of the world this is not the case, in Europe for instance its the law, providers HAVE to unlock. Since the situation in the states is known, the easiest would be, to buy a factory unlocked phone, but of course, nobody wants to pay the price.
For the iPhone4 however there is a chance that AT&T will change there mind, they did already unlock single phones in special circumstances, so lets see when the 2 year period is over what will happen. Atm all iPhone 4 are still under contract, after all its still not 2 years old.
If you bought a phone and did not fulfill the contract, AT&T got every right in the world not to unlock it. I’m sure you agree to that as you must understand that somewhere the difference from $200 (AT&T) and $800 (factory unlocked phone) must come from.

  34. Nico says:

Wimpie, Yes, it will still work after Jailbreak. You won’t be able to unlock. Purchase GEVEY SIM and then you can use any service provider like MTN, Vodacom, Cell C. Even overseas. You buy a sim, place it in your phone, follow the instructions and use it.

    • Joe says:

      Hi Nico,
Are you sure Gevey SIM works with BB 04.11.08? I was just sent my brother old Iphone 4 from USA it was AT&T, he upgraded to 4S, but sofar all I have found on the net is that with Baseband 04.11.08 even Gevey does not solve the problem of using it with another provider ?

      • Joe says:

        Dear Criss,
This is a reply I found on the net :

Bayan Qandil, Mobile Technology Expert, BlackBerry …
ATT has stated on their website that they do not unlock the iPhone (although they do unlock other phones). This likely due to their historical exclusivity on the iPhone, which they no longer have… so they may change their opinion.

Having said that, there is nothing stopping you from unlocking it yourself. It is no longer illegal to do so in the US (as it used to be a few years back)

Having read this I would like yr opinion on this as an apple expert/employee , I respect yr opinion but as the Iphone 4 I was presented by my brother who completed his contract with AT&T for this phone and upgraded to a 4S according to the statement above it would be legal NOW to unlock a phone at the end of contract ?
        Seasons greetings

        Joe

      • Chriss says:

        Hi Joe,
Indeed, AT&T might change there mind as the pressure is getting quite strong. We will see when the first contracts run out. Your brothers contract has not run out yet, the iPhoene4 is not even 2years old, so what he did is to upgrade, that is by no means terminating the running contract.
Also, it is not legal to unlock the iPhone, not in the States nor anywhere else, what has been legalised is the jailbreak. After all, when people want to “enhance” there devices, to the point of unusability, so be it, but the unlock is still not part of that since we are talking serious money here. Money the providers loose and belive me, they do not want to loose money.
Easiest way to get out of your dilema is to sell the AT&T phone to somebody that can use it with them or a sub provider and get a phone where you live or a factory unlocked one.
Easiest solution and no wait for any cards, unlocks or hacks.

  35. Wimpie says:

Thanx for all the replies, I’ll give it a go after I get home from holliday.

i just jailbroke my ihpone 4 5.0.1 and i have cydia on there but can dowloand none of the repo help

    • Wimpie says:

Hi Uneek, According to allot of sites the cydia servers are rather busy, so allot of people are having problems with this, even people that have their phones still on 4.3.3 are having problems downloading from cydia. Most of the recommendations are to wait a few days for the server to calm down.

      Hope this helps

I sure hope every one kept there shsh blobs for 4.3.3 i made custom 4.3.3 firmware and after seeing all the 5.0.1 issues i want nuttim to do with ios 5 u wanna unlock 3gs is ur best bet otherwise carrier locked. I’ve purchased a factory unlocked iphone4 (BB 02.10.04) (about 1 year before the iphone4 was released in SA) during a visit in USA and paid $800. Unfortunately, they know I am a foreigner, because I asked specifically for an unlocked iphone4, and when I reached SA, the phone was locked on AT&T. When I contacted the seller, all he replied back, was “SORRY – SEL IT TO SOMEONE ELSE” This is how the Yankees do bussiness. For 1 year, I could not use my iphone4 and then, luckilly, GEVEY SIM came out. Now, no more Yankee products for me. I’d rather buy China, cause they work every time, is cheap and if broken, throw away and buy a newer model. You do not have all this unlock nonsence and all features work perfect. (My friends are using them all around the world without any trouble and laughing at us with our jialbreak/unlock crab

    • Chriss says:

I am sorry to hear that, but you got conned and thats not Apples fault. I really do not understand that an official Apple Store will defraud foreigners. What shop did you buy it from? Do you have the receipt? You can not only complain about that, even now, a year later, but you can have the seller and his boss fired and get compensation (a shiny new 4S)
A factory unlocked phone will work anywhere no unlock, no hassle, nothing. Except the issue with the micro SIM ( not available in some parts) it works just like any other phone.

A simple e-mail with the facts, the Apple Store in question, the receipt and the Serial Number of your iPhone should be enough.

Apple is expensive, but by no means a rip off. And any employe that defrauds a customer in the name of Apple does not belong on his/her job.

    Hi,
I have an Iphone 4S locked to Bell network in Canada. Im planning to move to Pakistan now, but i want to know as to wether i should sell my locked 4s and get a factory unlocked 4 or should i wait for an iphone 4s network unlock?

Your help would be highly apprecisted.

    Thankyou,
    Tanzil.

    • Chriss says:

Sell it. There will not be any unlock.

    • Gabe says:

Tanzin, 4S are SIM factory unlocked, or they will be after 3 months of service. This is in order to use it internationally. At least the US sprint ones. You gotta find out about Bell ones.

  41. Garadee says:

Hi my iphone4s battery is going, is any thin i can do for this, it is new phone about aweek.

  42. Thug dizzle says:

All im hearing is after iphone4 bb1.59 without gevey it unlockable and the 4s is unlockable. I see one solution. Everybody sell off apple stop buying them. They wanna send us a message why dont we send them a message. Androids look better n better daily. Dont have google poutin bout there phones. They prib happy ppl jus buyin them to use N E WHere !

    • Chriss says:

You forget, that with Android you got the same sitiation. If you buy a subsedised phone, a GS2 for example, and pay your $99 for it, you will not be able to put a t-mobile card in it if its a AT&T locked phone.
If you buy the unlocked version for $ 599 you are “free” but the same is the case if you buy the unlocked iPhone. You do not have to worry about BaseBands or anything else, if you get yourself an unlocked phone in the first place.
Apple could not care less if you say that you will not buy the AT&T phones, they got there money already and for all there concerned they can be used for landfill. So, your protest should go against the providers, that lock the phones in the first place and even worse, refuse to unlock them after a certain amount of time.
But it would mean that you have to pay the phone, full price. Nobody wants that. I do not understand, that you think its your right to get a phone cheap or free paid for by a provider so you can defraud said provider and use the device somewhere else.
      Just pay the money.

  43. Thug dizzle says:

Peep it whiney. I paid full price for all my phones! And att did give the unlock codes for my androids and there both on t mobile !! N e thing else dumb u have to say ???? Doball phone makers and providers hire ppl to defend them well seems like u dont do all ur homework !! Not all of us wait for the half price deals.

  44. Thug dizzle says:

Secondly not all of us want an unlock for a diff carrier i can affird my bill whiney !! Sum of us want unlock for over seas BECUZ we dont want huge roaming bills !! So why dont u defend that reasoning WHINEY !!

    • Chriss says:

Sorry, but the winey person is you. If you travel on business, you do not change your SIM and pay the roaming because you need to be reachable unter your number. If you travel for pleasure and reachability is no issue, you might want to install a foreign SIM and would have no problem if you have the factory unlocked phone in the first place.
The situation is not particular to iPhones, but ALL subsedised phones, dunb and smart. They are ALL locked.
If reachability is no issue, get yourself for the days on holliday a cheap local prepaid phone and use your iPhone over Wifi (nearly everywhere) in your Hotel.
This is the case since we have mobile phones in the 80, why should that change with the iPhone?

Just a small fact: 0.7% of iPhones from AT&T are used outside of the US on average over the course of the year. 9.4% of Americans have a passport, less then 2% ever use it.(ex military)

As a matter of fact, there are more people in prison in the US then roaming foreign shores.

If anybody should complain its the Europeans, roaming and lock issues are far worse here. Immagine to pay roaming everytime you cross the hudson and change countries (and providers) 3 times till New Hamshire.

      • Samare says:

        Hi ! all there,
Let’s not make it personal and regional issue as we are in the same platform. I believe no one will be rewarded by presenting the figures and debating on this. A simple solution everyone looking for is unlock their phone and use it. In my opinion the sellers should be more responsible then buyers as most of the locked iPhones are sold during the contract period and they say it is unlocked and once you want use it overseas then you are trapped.

Hope for the support from everyone.

      • Joe says:

        Hi Chriss,
Happy New yr, in my opinion there is no such thing as a subsidized phone , in the end the customer ends up paying for the full price of the phone if not extra, only in monthly payments instead of cash over the counter. So the sencible thing to do would be to always buy a provider free phone , or unlocked phone, as you will get far better deals on monthly rates !
        Just my opinion

      • Chriss says:

Joe, absolutely, but most people see that tey have to pay $199 instead of $799, so for some the first is a better deal. After all, you always have to pay for service and you simply have to calculate if one deal is better then another.
This entire locking problem only exists with AT&T and they are the only ones responsible. Get a Verizon or Sprint iPhone and you can pop in any SIM anywhere if you so desire. And while it is quite anoying, the majority of users do not even know about this as they simply use there devices as they always did.

Also, we still do not know if AT&T mught not unlock there phones after all once the contracts run out. Once large corps that run thousands of iPhones demand this so they can for excample sell there phones, AT&T might have to cave in.

Until then, we can only wait and see as no contract has finished yet.

  45. Thug dizzle says:

    Concur !!!!

  46. Samare says:

Wait and see!!! Hope for grin,

  47. BajanTommy says:

AT&T really needs to arrived at a decision and maybe they are not because we the consumers are not putting enough pressure on them. Look at what happened when a know carrier decided to charge $2 for single online bill payments. Pressure = results. In my case, my wife purchased a full priced iPhone 4 soon after they came out in the USA. This was before the phone could be purchased in its unlocked state. As the Dev-team were never able to deliver the unlock, I ended up purchasing a Gevey Sim that worked. Recently, my home button became unstable and finally unworkable. After searching the web for a solution, the only one I could find was Restart-Hard reset-Restore. Well, after the Restore you can guess the rest -b.b. 4-11-08. Gevey no longer works. My question: Why can I not get an unlock code from AT&T? I paid full price for MY phone and was NOT subsidized by the carrier.

    • Chriss says:

If a carrier makes a charge of $2 for EVERYBODY there will be massive protests. And pressure.
If a carrier refuses to unlock a phone, a fakt that over 95% of all users do not even know, the pressure of the remaining 5% is far less.
In AT&T case its even less then 5%.

we monitor over 120 iPhone sites in over 30 Countries, this AT&T refusal is not the big deal everybody thinks. The unlock itself is, because ALL carriers lock there phones, all around the world (and surprise, the world is far bigger then then US) and people want there phones cheap or free, of course without paying the contracts. Sure, everybody has to buy there iPhone in a nother part of the world, as you do, nobody could immagine that this cheap phone from the US is not working in there own country. bohoh, its all Apples fault. It is NOT.
If you really live in a country that does not have the iPhone, then you will have to get a unlocked one. If you do not like that or if its too expensive, well, tough.
But in General the iPhone IS available in your country, why not simply get it there? It still is going to be locked, but at least to the provider you want to use. Since August 2010 the iPhone is available worldwide unlocked, thats also the reason that no more BB have been hacked, there is no reason for it.
Anybody that bought there phone in the few month before that, has to wait and see if AT&T is changing there mind and releasing those phones. There where less then 300000 worldwide, the majority in the States with Stateside clients. Many others that bought and exported these phones, have with the BB 1.59 also the unlock. How many of those 10000 or 20000 from that time are still surviving is anybodys guess. But the market is so small, that even if everybody who has one of these phones in a foreign country and wants now (still not contract free after less then 2 years) the unlock from AT&T is in a very weak position.

  48. Thug dizzle says:

And my iphone4 was bought before my contract.

  49. Thug dizzle says:

Thats wat im saying. My phone was bought seperte from my two yr contract !! Our so called apple advisor i think blows smoke up our asses att gave me unlock codes for my androids even after telling them they were goin on t mobile still not a prob. I truly believe its apple saying dont give them unlocks. Considering att now the only place to get iphone now. So wats the new reason why they wont unlock ? Wedidnt het that memo so come on apple lets c the work order and paperwork and let us ALL c wats really up. I believe apple blames att ans if u call att they say its apple.

    • Chriss says:

It is hard to understand what you trying to say, maybe you can write in your own language better then in english?
Anyway, Apple IS blaming AT&T, because it is AT&Ts own decission to lock or unlock the phones, Apple got nothing to do with the phones after they sold them to AT&T.
Apple can’t demand anything, lock or unlock, as these phones are the property of AT&T,
AT&T NEVER blamed Apple that they can not unlock, because that is not the case. In order to unlock any iPhone, Apple needs the code from the provider, by themselfes they can not do it.

On every iPhone that is locked, it is clearly stated that it will only work with any AT&T contract, on the website, in the Apple Store, in AT&T stores, simply everywhere. BEFORE you spend any money
Sprint and Verizon decided to not lock the GSM part of the phone, but you can still not get it subsedised and walk away with the phone without signing the contract first and have the CDMA chip activated.

If you now decide to take you phone outside the country, you CAN put a local GSM chip in and use it. All the while you pay for two years your contract in the states. Even if you do not use it. Financial gain? None.

  50. Thug dizzle says:

I mean att not the only place to get iphone. Sprint and verizon. All the sprint iphones came unlocked !!!!!!!!!! B

    • Chriss says:

That is correct, but of course you will have to have a CDMA contract activated, you do not even get the phone before that.
