The results are in for Mobile Manufacturer of the Year 2012. Normally, when these results come in we see Nokia sitting pretty at the top. However, for the first time in 14 years, someone has knocked them off, and that someone is Samsung.
Samsung have proved themselves worthy opponents in the smart phone arena with, releases such as the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2. Moreover, things can only get better for them with the imminent release of the Galaxy Grand and the Galaxy S4.
In the last year, Samsung have seen a huge increase of 5% in the total number of cellphones shipped across the globe, whereas Nokia have lost a massive 6%. Nokia have been at the top since taking the crown in 1998 so this news can only be huge disappointment to them, especially since they ditched Symbian OS in favor of Windows Phone 8.
Although Apple are sitting in third place in the overall ranks, when it comes to smartphones they are second only to Samsung. Samsung have increased their lead in this market by 8% to 28% of the market share, whereas Nokia have dropped from 16% in 2011 down to an all-time low of 5%.
In 2011 Apple dislodged Nokia from the top as the largest smart phone vendor based on revenue and this year Samsung knocked them off with the highest number of units sold. If Samsung continue in this vein then it is highly likely that they will take over from Nokia as top dogs and, if Nokia continue their slide into oblivion then Apple will surely take second spot, with their always firmly on the number one slot.
