Steps to Upgrade iPhone 4 to iOS 5 Firmware using Sn0wbreeze :
- Download Snowbreeze 2.8 beta 8
- Download iOS 5 ipsw files
- Download iTunes 10.5 required for iOS 5 upgrade and install in your computer .
- Launch Snowbreeze and select the iOS 5 ipsw file downloaded in previous step .
- Snowbreeze will detect the firmware and you can move to next page .
- In this page you will select “Baseband Preservation Mode” . Snowbreeze will then create the custom ipsw file .
- After the ipsw file is created it will appear in your desktop with the prefix “Sn0wbreeze” .
- Now put your device in DFU mode and click “START” button on Snowbreeze .
- To put your device in DFU you have to first turn off your phone and then press and hold both home and power button for 10 seconds. Then leave power button and keep holding home button for another 10 seconds. Your device will now enter DFU mode . Snowbreeze will detect the DFU state and put yiour device in Pwned DFU mode required for iOS 5 upgrade .
- Launch iTunes 10.5 downloaded in Step 3 and it will detect your device in recovery mode. Press SHIFT key on your keyboard and click Restore button on iTunes .
- Itunes will now ask you to choose the restore file . Browse to the custom iOS 5 ipsw file created above .
Now your iPhone 4 will be upgraded to iOS 5 and baseband preserved . Share this tip with your friends using the Facebook Share button or Google +1 button below .

I’m sorry my friend, if you did upgrade your base-band, then you can’t downgrade it. You must always upgrade IOS while preserving the base-band
download the ipsw 4.3.5 and put your phone into restore mode then open itunes it will see your phone in restore mode hold shift and open the 4.3.5 ipsw and click restore. it WILL downgrade your baseband back to 4.10.01 ive done it twice now so i know it works.

Hold power and home button for 10 seconds and then relise power but keep holding home button for 20 sec and booom you in a dfu mode! (first power off the phone)
And make sure your USB cord is plugged into your pc or Mac while doing so.

Hi, I have downgraded my firmware to 4.3.5 but my base band is still 4.11.08 =( What am I doing wrong? Also, About 75% through the restoration, itunes would pop up error(1)? Please, I need help! I know I am very close to downgrading!

its baseband 4.11.08 but firmware is 4.3.5… I don’t understand why the baseband didn’t change. Again, During the restoration,(about 75% through) itunes would pop up an error and stop the full restoration…maybe that’s why the baseband did not change….
modem firm is 4.11.08.
Tai…. with which itunes version you are restoring? successful restoration with firm ware change will happen with itunes 10.4.
if its not happening, it means there is some error in the process and or the files… please confirm??

Gevey doesn’t work with ios5′s new baseband, and therez no way to downgrade baseband. For now, U’re stuck with using ur iphone as an ipod touch. Be patient, some new unlocks will obviously pop up in future.

you can downgrade ur phonr to 4.3.5 by using itunes 10.4 version once its downgraded you can upgrade phone with custom ios 5 which will preserve ur baseband and your phone iwll work with gevey sim.

you can’t downgrade the base-band
untethered only for 3gs old bootrom ,…. even 3gs new bootrom also cannot untethered. So lucky if u are one of the early 3gs buyers.

Gevey doesn’t work on ios5′s baseband. therefore, you have to retain your 04.10.01 bb. this post is all about doing that. create custom fw to preserve bb to be able to unlock on ios 5 using Gevey
Hi i´m trying to update to IOS5 how is written on the tutorial but all the time i have the same error 3194 or 1604, why?what should I do?
Well, any errors ranging from 3000 and up to 4000 is a server related problem, a firewall error, or a proxy problem. So, today the errors are nothing but a case of Apple’s Overload of servers.
If you’re getting error 1604, make sure your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is in recovery mode. If that doesn’t solve, it might be the USB timing. So unplug your USB, restart the computer and try again.
If you’re getting error 3194, erase host files with gs.apple.com

@SDSH I’m getting error 3194 but I have yet to try it. I tried this method before with other error and it upgraded my baseband! I do not want this happening to me again. So if I’m gonna modify my hosts file and remove gs.apple.com would this still preserve my baseband?
Stcuk on error 2005, while running tiny umbrella in background while updating to CFW, changed the usb port and connector, still having the problem.
If i dont run tiny umbrella in background, then error 3194

connect the iphone in pwned dfu mode to itunes, then open the host file and delete the gs.apple stuff completely. then try to shift+restore +snowbree ipsw file. I followed this way and able to install ios5 without running tinyumbrella.

u need to edit ur etc/hosts file,i am sure it is still pointing to the cydia server, not apple server since tiny umbrealla always change it.

No, you just need a valid sim card to configurate your iPhone, like ATyT, then you have to use your gevey sim card. I had the same problem but now I’m in IOs 5 with preserve baseband

No, I was on 4.3.5 on 4.10.01 baseband using the gevey sim card. All I did was follow this tutorial, and everything was going fine except for when it had to activate the iphone. Thankfully I found an old non-working att sim card ..cut it to a micro sim…it activated and had a little trouble because it didn’t want to get the tmobile signal. The “112″ and everything was all the same. After toggling on and off the airplane mode it all worked perfectly fine.
I didn’t try yet, but every time i had to restore my iphone, i needed the old chip (official). And after that it works fine for me….so, guess it must work here too.
May i know what is your baseband after you upgrade to ios5?

How did you get gevey sim to work? I`m on os5 with 4.10.01 BB and every time i restart the phone to use the Gevey sim it gives me the accept screen but then I never get the signal. ??????

search your computer for sn0wbreeze . the ipsw file created will have that “sn0wbreeze” prefix

Hi. I have Iphone 4 running 4.1, I want to upgrade to iOS 5. I already backup everything with itunes , I also used WinSCP to back up also, and used Aptbackup for cydia apps.
I upgraded Itunes to the newer version and I downloaded both sn0wbreeze and iOS 5 ipsw.
Should I select Simple Mode , instead of baseband preservation? Also I read somewhere that I need something called Ibooty???
This is my first tethered jailbreak so I’m pretty much lost ,lol
is your iphone factory unlocked? if not why the simple mode? just follow the simple tutorial above. and about ibooty, you just need redsn0w and use just boot tethered right now to re-jailbreak, after your phone reboots.
My phone is from ATT, never unlock it myself, just jailbroke it to get cydia.
So I just, follow instructions as explained above and after all is done, get redsn0w to boot it up?
What do I do to restore my old apps? (I backed everything in PC and on itunes)…. just hit restore on Itunes?

edit & remove hosts of apple & cydia from windows/system32/drivers/etc. edit the hosts file with notepad, save and restart. Then try again. Worked for me.

For users who are using Iphone 4 with bb 4.10.01 and using gevey sim:
1. preserve bb first
2. get custom ipsw
3. update to ios 5
4. activate it.
5. put the gevey sim back in.

and for step 4, for people who don’t have original sim must we jailbreak it to activate or is there other way(s) to do it? As far as I know currently we are still waiting for untethered version.

@fa You preserve bb with custom ipsw,that’s one step. Snowbreez do not activate ios5, so there is no point for that.
bb is ok.it is 04.10.01…but grevey is not working…..what steps should i follow? though i followed the previous one to go in network.

In my case yes, i ha to use original att sim card to bypass activation. Dont know about redsnow though. Give it a try it might work.

You can activate without original sim! jus use snowbreez get GM or final version then choose expert mode —> general —> check Activate the iphone (hacktivate)—> build —> restore from iTunes! And GM = final (version) release (the same)

After reading all this I’m afraid to try to update to iOS5. Couldn’t I just do the update through iTunes & then if need be, re-jailbreak to get all my stuff back? I know it sounds like a huge hassle, but better than losing anything or GOD FORBID, not being able to use my phone cuz that would shuck for me!
Strange. it took me about 10 -15 minutes to jailbreak+gevey unlock and to get my stuff back.

I use gevey unlocked iphone4. I tried to upgrade ios5 and I couldn’t achieve it. Now I downgraded to 4.3.5 version. When I connect to the itunes and select iphone it shows like “The Sim card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported”.

Ok i did the expert mode and checked the activate phone and then went to build IPSW (in expert mode again) I suppose that’s correct?
Also when do you use ibooty?
1) and 2) You do it when you building IPSW. (you did everything correct.)
3) This is a tethered that means every time your iphone run’s out of battery you have to plug it in back to pc or mac so that it can start again. This is were iBooty comes in… run it and follow the steps it shows how to boot iphone.(do it only if your iphone freezes at the apple logo, when you booting it up,otherwise it is not necessary.)

To All With Problems Using Windows, Keep these tips in mind:
1) After you download the IPSW file, if using Windows, makes sure you go to control panel -> Folder Options -> Uncheck the “Hide File Extensions”. Then you can change the file from .zip .rar TO .ipsw Adding just a “.ipsw” only changes the name of file NOT extension which is needed.
2) Should you get Errors and be stuck in DFU mode, try this: Open up the SnowBreeze 2.8b8 -> Hit OK -> Hit Close Credits
Then on top hit iREB -> Run iREB -> Yes or No (Self Explanatory) and follow directions from there. This will Restore into your custom ipsw from itunes!

I am a windows user.
I have upgraded IOS 5 sucessfully by presuming Base band using sn0wbreeze and works fine with gevey SIM.
Note:Do not upgrade the latsest version of base band then gevey sim wont work.
While Using sn0wbreeze use the “BaseBand Preservation mode” option only if you have the original SIM or similar carrier sim otherwise use simple or Expert mode for unlocking the phone.
I am stuck with facetime issue.
not able to activate Facetime it stuck in “waiting for activation” any thoughts ?

For Jailbreak please wait for the untethered JB version.

Follow the gevey unlock procedure without looking at ICCID.
After u get network only then u will have ICCID.
I had the same problem.. but my phone is ok now… its so simple.. all you hav to do is just remove your gevey sim and insert the original sim tray with any service provider… n den upgrade ur phone to ios 5.0 through itunes … ur phone will be factory unlocked then……

I just did it, I had my iphone 4 running ios 4.3.5 and unlocked with gevey sim.
After creating hte custom IPSW, just to preserve baseband, and after several error 1600, I restarted my PC and put the apple cable directly to my PC, not through a hub like I’ve been doing. That got me through the update step, and it did preserve my baseband.
After activation with the original sim card, I put in my carrier card with the gevey, and for more than an hour it was pure agony. I didn’t get the 1 bar signal, and was not able to make the emergency call. after many turn off restart of the phone with no luck. Suddenly voila it worked! I can’t say I’m sure but here what I did the last time:
I turned on the phone and selected “accept” as soon as it showed
dialled 112 without any bars showing, then “end” after 2 seconds
“Settings” then “Airplane Mode” and here I waited to get the sim failure message, turned off airplane mode, “sim failure” message and then waited for may be 2 or 3 minutes and it worked OK.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys, after inserting gevey sim start the iphone and don’t wait for the bar signal(you wont get it), just proceed with normal gevey unlock procedure.
dial 112 and end it after 3 sec
and start airplane mode and wait until you get message “no simcard” then put off airplane mode.

Install itunes 10.4
use tiny umbrela for shsh
for restoring use ipsw 4.3.5
this will work my friend has did it.
didnt work as a first time tiny umbrella user. my shsh files were supposed to be stored b44 upgrade to ios5. but y wont the custom ipsw work upon restore tho after i already uupgraded. tried it several times but no luck.

No dude, by mistake I have restored my mobile now my base band has been upgraded so right now I am not able to use gevey sim, are able to downgrade.

Can someone please help me. I followed all the steps, but on step 11 I clicked what I had downloaded from Itunes, not the custom firmware. I tried to find the custom firmware I created, but cannot find it anywhere. So I have two questions. Did I lock my phone to the new baseband? Or can I restore to the custom Firmware with my preserved baseband as long as I can find it? If that`s possible where would it be? I`m on windows 7 if that matters. Thanks so much!
did the same thing 4 days ago. tried it all. your b.b`s now stuck at 4.11.08 and even downgrading wont do. apple keeps bb the same. oh and the custom firmware fiile shud b in desktop on windows 7. try n let me know results, see if i missed anything. i jus want my iphone bak.

Ultimate thanks to Sn0wbreeze tool creator(s) for bringing up a method to upgrade to iOS5 without upgrading the baseband. You guy(s) rock. I took Sn0wbreeze approach for the first time as redsn0w is still not available for Windows to create custom ipsw.
I used the old method of accepting the Gevey message and then dialing 112 without waiting for 1 bar signal. I had to reboot once as this method did not work for the first time.
iPhone unofficial developers…. kudos to you all. May your spirit continue in supporting folks like us who want use iPhone despite official issues in using it.

I upgraded to I os 5 and my base band is also preserved,Iam not getting the GEVEY Accept screen and signal..can someone please help me
Eject your sim tray and pop it back in and wait for the accept screen. It is not true that you always have to reboot you phone for Gevey to work. I always just eject slightly and push it back in after it says no sim.
Next you will NOT get a signal in ups five. Dial 112 anyways. Hang up after 2 seconds then toggle on airplane mode and wait till you get a pop up that says invalid sim or no sim installed. Then switch airplane mode back off and you get two popups. Click ok then turn airplane mode on then off quickly and your carrier will appear. I use the original gevey sim that came in the red package and that’s how I do it everytime. And if you’ve ever lost signal for a long period of time, most times toggling airplane mode on then off quickly will reload your carrier when you are back in range of its signal.

Ever since, I have used sn0wbreeze to JB my 3GS and preserve its baseband for an ultrasn0w unlock. Yet one thing that puzzles me is that, how do they preserve a baseband using that method of JB?

I have an Iphone4 (AT&T locked) but working on different carrier using GEVEY SIM. It is running on iOS4.1 and has baseband/firmware 02.10.04.
I want to upgrade my current iOS4.1 to 4.2 or any higher version but WANT TO retain the baseband/firmware 02.10.04 so that i can use the GEVEY SIM with different carriers.
I have searched the net but fail to find any step-by-step foolproof/safe and less confusing guide.

I am a bit skeptical and scared to upgrade to iOS5, as I have read quite a few negative usability comments online (dont know how much fact or fiction), like apps/games not performing as expected, battery drainage, SIRI problems, incall issues etc.

iOS 5.0.1 has been released with all the fix . There is no unlock for iOS 5.0.1 . Jailbreak is possible using snowbreeze and redsnow

Yes it will work with Gevey Sim on iOS 5.0.1 using preserved baseband . Wait while we update you with the tutorial for upgrading to iOS 5.0.1

First you need to put your iDevice in DFU mode then open itunes and make the steps again
IPSW was verified. After clicking basband preservation mode it sayssnowbreeze failed to create custom IPSW. bad state(invalid stored block lengths).

I figured it out…so you dont get the error 3194 use the latest sn0wbreeze for 5.0.1 and use the 5.0.1 ipsw and i have confirmed it works preserving baseband 4.10.01

Help! I’m getting error 3194 when updating from 4.3.5. I tried all the suggested fix here to no avail! Except one though — remove gs.apple.com from the system hosts file. I tried removing this from my hosts file before when i encountered similar error, it was able to get rid of the error but it updated my baseband! I do not want this happening to me again! So my question is if I remove apple’s server from my hosts file and restore will my bb be preserved?
I would like to report to everyone that this tutorial works on my i4 bb 4.10.01 on iOS 5.0.1. Just use the latest files instead of the ones provided here for it to work on 5.0.1 and to get rid of error 3194.
