Parents Track Daughter’s iPhone – Receives Stalking Order from Court

Some of you may have heard of software that can be installed on a specific device, like a mobile phone, and used to monitor the contents of the phone and the person carrying it.  It gives you access to everything, including all text messages, emails and phone calls and most of them contain a GPS tracker to locate the device.  Whilst this sort of software can be a good idea if used for the right purpose, it’s not designed to be used as a means of harassment. Here’s why not.

A 21-year-old student, Aubrey Ireland recently filed a civil stalking order against her parents.  Her problems started when, being musically talented, she decided to attend the University of Connecticut. However, she did not have any funding so her parents paid for it.  They were not happy with her being left alone, 600 miles away from them so they took to visiting her unannounced.

She claims they started to harass her, accused of her of living a drug-fuelled promiscuous lifestyle and then told University staff that she was emotionally unstable and required treatment.  The final straw came when she discovered that they had installed tracking software on both her mobile phone and computer and were accessing all of her communications.  The upshot of the civil order is that her parents now cannot have any contact with her for a period of at least one year.

Interestingly enough, owners of 4th generation iOS devices will find that they have a feature called MobileMe already installed on their devices. This is a service provided by Apple to allow people to locate idevices that have been lost, stolen or misplaced, using FindMyiPhone. The app allows the owner to send a message to a lost device, remotely wipe the contents of it or lock it with a passcode.  Here’s how to setup MobileMe now FindMyiPhone on iOS devices :

  1. First download FindMyiPhone app from AppStore if not already installed
  2. Tap to launch the app and enter your login details.
  3. In Settings enable Location Services for FindMyiPhone app .
  4. Once this has been done you can then login to iCloud.com using your Apple ID, select the device you want to locate from a list on the left hand side of the screen and the app will then start to track the location of it.

While this is a handy feature, please be aware of the consequences that could result from improper use of the software.
