Steps to Jailbreak Iphone 4.2 iOS Firmware :
- Download iOS 4.2.1 ipsw file and latest version of RedSn0w 09.06.b4 from our Download Centre
- You must have iTunes 10.1 running in the background of your computer . [ Download iTunes 10.1 ]
- Now update your iPhone iPod touch to iOS 4.2.1 using the iOS 4.2 Update Tutorial
- Launch RedSn0w App and browse for the iOS 4.2.1 .ipsw firmware file you downloaded in Step 1.
- Now Select Install Cydia and then Next to proceed .
- In the next step you must connect your device to the computer. Make sure its turned off before you click on Next .
- In the next step your device will enter DFU mode . [ How-to enter DFU Mode ]. Follow on-screen instructions to put your device in the DFU mode by holding the Home and Power button together for 10 seconds. Release the Power button while still holding the Home button .
- From here RedSn0w will start doing it work and jailbreak your iphone .
Your device will now restart and you will have iphone jailbroken on the latest iOS 4.2.1 firmware .
Tethering : Since this is a tethered version for iphone 4 ipod touch 4 ,you will have to launch RedSn0w and choose the “Just boot tethered right now” option as shown in the image below to boot your iPhone 4 everytime you turn it off .
Windows Users : You must run RedSn0w exe file in XP Sp2 compatibility mode by right clicking on RedSnow App , then selecting Troubleshoot Compatibility [as shown in the image below]

Hi, After I had a few problems upgrading to iOS 4.2.1, I managed to jailbreak my iPhone 4 usin redsn0w. Though, after i went on Cydia and downloaded some apps i had previously, one of the apps required me to reboot. I thought it was rebooting, but it was bricked. I managed to un-brick it, and then I connected it to the computer. I connectec it to the computer and tethered it, and then i took it out withoput loading any apps, then I took it out of the computer, rebooted it, and found out that I had UN-TETHERED IT!!!
…It now works perfectly, and for thetime being, I dare to connect it to the computer again :/ Do you think I will be able to connect it to the computer without it tethering it again?

With a tetherd device you will have to connect it to computer and run the jailbreak program it will stand “just boot tetherd right now” or somethibg like that. So everytimet u have to boot as i do with my ipad when i need to restart after a program i installed from cydia just boot it up connect to computer shut it down run with redsn0w or something like thatand do what it stands on jailbreak

You people are to spoiled, Have a Jailbroken iPhone 4 with 4.1 myself and I see no reason to update. It would be something else if I updated by mistake or Apple forced me to update but it seems I already got everything I wanted in 4.1.
I rather have my hand untied then tied bedind my back with a golden rope. All the 4.2 functionallity will be available trough apps. Like The HDR Function in 4.1 has a HDR Pro comersial version that is even better.
However before the 4.1 Jailbreak there were talks that 4.1 JailBreak was going to be in the core of the phone and you would be able to upgrade and apple couldn’t do anything about it. Was that only the Shatter exploit that worked that way? Are they saving Shatter for the next iPhone now? because with Shatter Apple needed to change the whole hardware and couldn’t unbrake the JailBreak trough software. I asume it is better to wait until there is a firmware worth to open the can of worms for since 4.2 has something bad in it’s wifi. Use Wifi every day so only this is a deal breaker to me. However 4.1 is stabile enough and it could be worth to wait for something real nice before we bring in the big guns. Feels like taking a bazooka to a flie right now. However Apple can still find it because we told them it is there they are serching for sure and they wouldn’t if they didn’t know. So it could been a bad idea showing their hand however thanks to that the whole JailBreak community can sleep mutch calmer knowing what ever apple do they can’t crash it altogether.

Ok so I know this question was probably asked before but….
I just got through jb my iPhone 4 that I updated to the lastest IOS 4.2 version, if that makes any sense. Now I need to know if I am going to be able to unlock my iPhone because I bought it in the US and I am currently in France so I would love to be able to use my iPhone here.
So can somebody answer that question for me? Without too many technical terms if possible.

You can jailbreakit, but no unlock is yet avilable. It means you are out of luck for the time beeing. You may or may not unlock it.
There is other posibility. get a legit unlock from att… and this is hard. search the web to see what do they ask for it.

but my experience tells me it is very possible you will get the unlock, you just need to wait. and please, DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR PHONE without first chacking the status here or at dev team blog…. at least.

I am on jailbreak 4.1 .For now if I upgrade to iOS 4.2 Iknow I will lose the 4.1 jailbreak , from here can I jailbreak on 4.2 yet?
@ TSS : yes , you can JB it with RedSn0w but will loose the unlock as you’ll ugrade the baseband to 03.10.01
do wait a bit… my advice. you will have an un tethered unlock, and it may be a pain….

Well I don’t care about the Iphone 4 because I don’t have one yet. I have a iphone 3g On 4.2 and jailbroken. Redsnow works great! But for some reason I had to do it on my desk top not my labtop? Oohh well.

i upgraded my iphone4 to IOS 4.1 baseband 02.10.04…and now duno how the original setting run, i wanted to restore it back to 4.1…But itunes want me restore and upgrade it to 4.2. If doing so, i will lost my UNLOCK…. ANyone know how to restore without upgrade? T^T
download iOS 4.1 ipsw file first. then with Itunes restore to this firmware. ( While pressing shift , click on restore button.. then select this firmware.. )

Factory unlocked is a hardware unlocked, so you will always be unlocked no matter what firmware you upgrade your phone to. However, the current jb for os 4.2 is tethered, meaning if you ever reboot your phone, you will need to plug the phone to your pc and run the jb tool to kick the phone out of recovery mode. I assumed you are talking about iphone 4 here?

try to use recbook to boot your device out of recovery or simple use tiumbrella for that

Every time you turn off iPhone and turn it on, you need to “jailbreak” it again but do not install Cydia, choose “Just boot tethered right now” then it will start

I have a huge problem.I have iphone 4 with baseband 02.10.04. I have as u guys demonstrated ios updated into 4.2.1 and then with redsnow jailbroken.And it works very easyly but 2 daysago i have forgoten to charge and it started to show this battery low message in screen and after i charge it. It couldnt boot any more it stops in this apple and loading screen.How can we solve this problem.
ps: i have tried to this tethered jailbreak again it keeps loading and im not able to reboot my iphone.

I jailbroke my iphone 4 4.1 with limerain last month and was hoping that after Apple update it will still be jailbroken as i thought limerain claimed to be shatter exploit or something but after updating my iphone to firmware 4.2.1 now, my fone aint jailbroke anymore. Any suggestion how to jailbreak it again??? i dont need unlock as my fone is already unlocked.All i need is a jailbreak for 4.2.1
GreenPois0n was going to use Shatter however after limera1n got released by GeoHot using a different exploit The GreenPois0n Team put Shatter on ice and released GreenPois0n based on the same exploit as Limera1n. So nobody is using shatter yet since it’s to god to use it for just another update, It would be grewat if apple relesed a Iphone 4 GS or Pro or something and we could still use Shatter on that, however since apple knows about the exploit they will pay alot of money to find it and plug it. I just hope we are able to get another hardware upgraded iphone before they plug it. Because if they release it now apple will find it and we will never be able to use that exploit again. They can always use this exploit in 1 year or more to JailBreak every iPhone 4. Until then I am ok with reinstalling all the apps after every update. I am sure GeoHot released Limera1n just to save Shatter for later. Shatter is the best Exploit ever and it would be great if we could use it on the first modells of the next iphone to since iPhone 4 already feels old, we should get upgraded version of iPhone 4 before the summer of 2011 Maybe it will be for the 4G network or something since 3G is almost dead to….

Ive downloaded redsnow which works perfect but when i download the firmware for it and click redsnow then browse the firmware it doesnt work because it wont open the firmware. the firmware is in zip, but i use winzip and it still doesnt work.

I just followed the instructions to jailbreak my iphone 4 with iOS 4.2.1 using rainsn0w 09.06.b4. After I’m done jailbreaking, redsn0w says “Done!” but my iPhone does not power on.. the Apple logo is there on the screen and it is “loading” with those lines in a circular motion but it never ends up rebooting. Help me please, can I somehow just power on my phone ?!!?

Hey , I jailbreaked my iPhone 4 on firmware 4.2.1(8c148) using the latest version of redsnow .I did the steps as shown above, the proses was correct and I installed cydia and was successful , but one problem is really bothering me! Once I restart or the battery is flat and I want to restart , it’s stuck at the apple logo! That’s a problem for me, because I have to go to someone to jailbreak it on their computers ! The operation system (icons, apps etc.) does not unlock, it is JAILBROKEN.
Stop writing misleading sentences that cause people to accidentally do wrong things.
WAIT for the final UPDATES and TUTORIALS a couple days. Unitel then DO NOT DO ANYTHING if you want to save yourself from some annoying problems.

however, I’m having Problems with instaling iTunes, something to do with “bonjour” the “quicktime” and then a service pack error….

@Jeff : if you are on the factory locked operator and dont want to change , then you dont need the unlock . Just jailbreak , install cydia and from there you can download all the apps you want , fre paid etc . unlock is for those who want to chenge their operators , and its not mandatory for jailbreakers … read the FAQ for details
So – i just jailbroke – and it get stuck on the pineapple section, then reboots. Cydia app is there, but a plain white pic (no brown) and it wont open of course.
iPhone 4, iOS 4.2.1 – and the ONLY reason i updated is coz it died! I resprung last night and it just kept looping from safe mode into a respring then back into safe mode.

The jailbreak (with no errors) was successful, but i think it is not broken, because i can reboot the phone without software and i have only a white icon for the Cydia app!

Cant jailbreak my iphone…need some help. Tried updating using tinyumbrella from 4.0.2 to 4.2.1 and i have lost my baseband 01.59.00 now running 03.10.01 but cant jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.6b4. Need some assistance please. Cant access cydia on the phone after Redsn0w says done. Iphone starts on its own though and i do run Redsn0w with administrator privellages.

I have tried to jailbreak Verizon iPhone 4 with no luck. After greenpoison skull appears I get the itunes logo & usb cable. iTunes says it has detected recovering phone and must restore. Done this 6 times now usingg lastest version of greenpoison. H
