Method 1 : Redsn0w
Download Redsnow 0.9.10b1 and jailbreak your iPhone using the method explained here . You can also use any updated version or Redsn0w post version 0.9.10b1 . the Redsn0w Download page will be updated with the latest release .
- Backup your old jailbreak apps using AptBackup , xBackup or PkgBackup if already jailbroken .
- Upgrade your device to iOS 5.0.1 via iTunes (Ultrasn0w and Gevey Sim users should use custom iOS 5.0.1 ipsw for preserving baseband)
- Download Redsnow 0.9.10b1
- Launch the Redsnow.exe program in “Administrator Mode” and click on Jailbreak button
- New users simply leave it checked for first time jailbreaking . Uncheck “Install Cydia” if you are re-jailbreaking it from previous iOS 5.0.1untethered .
- Follow on-screen instructions and turn off your phone . Connect it to your PC/Mac and hit the next button
- Follow onscreen instructions to put your device in DFU mode .
- Redsnow will now start doing its work . Your device will show some codes running on-screen and then it will reboot for full untethered jailbreak with Cydia installed .
Redsn0w Problem Fix :
Method 2 : Pwnage Tool
Download PwnageTool for Mac and jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 untethered . Also preserves baseband for unlock using Ultrasnow 1.2.5 and gevey Sim on supported basebands .
- Download PwnageTool for iOS 5.0.1
- Launch the application on your Mac and select your iOS device ( iPhone 4 in this case)
- Now PwnageTool will search and find your iOS firmware (iOS 5.0.1) . If it is unable to find the firmware , choose “Expert” mode and browse the the ipsw file downloaded from Apple servers (link) .
- Now click on “Build” to create the custom IPSW for your device.
- Follow on-screen instructions to put your device in DFU mode (Pwned DFU) for restore with iTunes .
- Launch iTunes and select the custom ipsw file created by PwnageTool .
- To do this you have to press and hold Option + Restore button and select the custom firmware
- Itunes will now restore and jailbreak your device while also preserving its baseband for unlock with Ultrasn0w and Gevey Sim
Method 3 : Corona Jailbreak ( Cydia Tweak )
For already jailbroken iOS 5.0.1 devices , turn tethered jailbreak into untethered using simple cydia tweak . Corona Untether 5.0.1 supports: iPhone 4 (both GSM & CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G and iPad 1st generation . Your device must be pre-jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1 .
- Upgrade Cydia ( by allowing any new update notification icon if showing) .
- Now go to “Search” tab and type in Corona
- Tap on the result to bring the install page . Tap on “Install” button to begin download and installation
- After the app is downloaded and installed , your device will reboot and untether your phone .

Method 4 : Sn0wbreeze jailbreak

It is jailbreak and hence baseband independent . this will not unlock your phone on 04.11.08 .

I got Redsn0w downloaded and started the jailbreak, but after hitting the jailbreak button and putting the phone in DFU, it said something about limera1n and then something else. Everything seemed fine, however then the phone rebooted and the Redsn0w screen said that it was waiting for a reboot, but never progressed any further than that.
Not sure what the problem is. This is on a windows machine by the way.

Im currently on ios 5 if i update to 5.0.1 would it affect my baseband which is 04.11.08?? I know that this baseband doesnt have any unlock yet but i just dont want to make more latest since the old one is already taking a long time.. Anybody please help..
no I believe ios 5.0.1 is still on bb 4.11.08
5.01 got the same BB as 5.0, for 5.1 (soon) and 5.2 (March) a new BB is coming. But do not worry, for way over a year, since August 2010, no BB has been unlocked and none will. So if you got 4.11.08 there is no chance what so ever that you will unlock in the future, it makes no difference if you update.

Is it possible to do this jailbreak and preserve baseband during iOS upgrading? If yes how do you that? Or is it possible only for the snowbreeze tethered jailbreak?
What I did is used snowbreeze which is tethered and then added corona untether . Work very well w/o errors.
I dont trust redsnow cos it screwed my baseband to 4.10.01

I have iphone 4 with baseband 02.10.04 (AT&T) and i updated my iphone with baseband preserve upgrade (costume ios 5.0.1) but at the end. I tried with gevey and it wont work. I checked i have still baseband 02.10.04 but there are no signals and it saids sometimes no network and searching and i tried also after jailbreak ultrasnow (i read somewhere else ultrasn0w would work with gevey) but no hope gevey does not work with IOS 5.0.1 so i have to downgrade
. Are there anyone having same experiences??

How is you signal bar ? Is it working with all sticks.I tried also with Snowbreeze but i have to jailbreak with redsn0w so gevey doesnt worked.There were no signals after accepting gevey message.

If your bb is 4.11.08 no no unlocks for 4.11.08 hopwfully you preserved your bb 4.10.01 then you may unlock using a gevey
have you upgraded your iphone with ios 5.0.1 with preserving BB??
all you need to do is jailbreak your iphone and then unlock it using ultrasnow and gevey sim that’s all

Once ur phone is upgraded to latest BB..You cann’t go back to old BB.you have to wait until the unlock found by iphonedevteam..

Just want to say, I jailbroke my phone a couple of months ago and have done a lot of research on the web on all the how to’s and why for’s… etc…. and my conclusion for which I cannot see how anyone can not agree with!!! is that it sucks big time!!!!! you have to be in a constant state of maintenance to keep things going, anything you do requires needing this and that all the time! and what a run around on this UN-tethered jailbreak….good luck with that!!

Jailbreak : after your iphone jailbreak, it will allow you to install thrid party applications in your iphone.
Unlock: After your iphone is unlocked, it will allow you to use any SIM in your iphone..

if it’s factory unlocked you can just upgrade it like normal.
you only need to preserve your bb because it takes time to crack them (and it’s been over a year since the last one) and you want to stay on an unlockable one. if you want to stay with your standard provider/have factory unlocked you don’t have to worry about bb

That’s what happened, first i updated my 5.0 Redsw0n thedered jailbreak into 5.0.1, then i run the new redsw0n app to jailbreak it unthered, then i unselected the option “install cydia”, now i run it again to install cydia and i’m having this error:
“Error, no successful firmware download after 60000 ms! Giving up…”

Not only iBooks. There are other apps as well, including icloud. But then, most jailbreakers do not bother to pay for anything, installous is all they want.
Unfortunatly that has problems atm, even crackolous is not working correctly.

I used APTbackup, and re installed APP sync for IOS 5 but still my apps that I backed up do not show. Guess i’ll just redownload them. Anybody else experienced this problem?
For sure. Many of my Cydia apps didn’t “reload” after I JB, synced, then pressed Restore using APtbackup, …
Activator is also saying my Springboard is stuck in SafeMode (and it won’t clear regardless how many times I restart) – so I think I need to start this whole thing over.

There are many repos that will not load, timeout errors, packages not available, size mismatch issues, etc.
If you installed a Cydia app or hack and it isn’t working correctly, you likely got a partial package due to the load on the repos. Once the load diminishes, re-install it.
This happens every time new jailbreak tools are released.
There is no reason to post about it nor complain about it as it will take time for the load to diminish!”

You don’t. Where did you get the phone from? Any Apple Store? A provider? But then you should have a SIM. Did you check if the SIM is not already installed? Some providers have it already in the tray.
Is it new? How do you know it is not activated?

I’m new to Iphone, have been an android user till now. I have iPhone 4 5.0.1 on Sprint. I am seeing a lot of terms here I don’t understand, (base band, gevesim, hacktivate, etc.) and I am reluctant to try and jailbreak my phone until I actually understand what I am doing. Can anyone point me to a good tutorial, web page, that explains all of this? Thanks.
Hi Scott, as a Sprint customer you do not have to worry about most of the jargon. You do not need a gevey as you do not have a SIM, you do not need to hacktivate yout phone or care about your Base Band. All this is for GSM clients only (AT&T and the rest of the world)
You are working with a CDMA phone and as such only have to worry about the CDMA version of the jailbreak. As added bonus your SIM Card slot is unlocked, ie factory unlocked, so you can pop in any SIM you like, anywhere in the world. Verizon is doing the same thing, except that you have to wait 60 days into your contract to request the (free) unlock.
So, you could just go on with a jailbreak. If there would be one. But for the “world phone” there is none yet. But soon there will be one and if you like to weather the problems und slip ups that you can read in the last 500 or so comments here, and if you think its really worth it. After all, your phone is working fine right now, or is it?
After I jailbroke my iPhone , it goes to the pineapple to install Cydia , but when it reboots it just stays at the Apple logo and goes in a loop . Any help ?

just wondering if anyone is having the same irritating problem as me. it has to do with the music. after i sync my playlists, some of the songs appear to be on the playlist, but after you press play, there’s nothing. also, the playlists do not show up as it is on itunes on my comp. i’m talking about the sorting order. i sort by date added, latest at the top, but after syncing, it shows up oldest first. irritating because i like listening to the latest music i added to my playlists.

Ok, so I use AT&T and have an untethered JB on iOS4.3.3 currently. I’ve been waiting and waiting for iOS5.ANYTHING to be untethered. Which is the best method to use? I don’t think that I need to preserve my baseband, but I could be wrong! How do I know if I should preserve my baseband? I’ve never preserved it before. I use the regular mini-Sim Card from AT&T and use AT&T services. Should I just do the redsnow or is the cydia untethered more successful?
