Subject: Exit Recovery Mode on iPhone 3G 4.2.1 with 6.15.00 baseband . Stuck at connect to iTunes Screen

Okay, So I’ve just moved back to Australia after being in England for 5 years, and my boyfriend has decided to move back with me
He was on O2 UK and on a contract phone, and he wanted to jailbreak it so he could use his Optus pay as you go sim card in his Iphone 3G.
So, We downloaded PwnageTool and Jailbroke the phone using that, and everything was fine, the phone was jailbroken but not unlocked. So when we tried to install the ultrasn0w it said there was a problem and he needed the 3.0 firmware, or something like that. So we re-installed back to his old settings and un-did the jailbreak, and then re-did the jailbreak using the PwnageTool unlock edition, and changed the baseband to 6.15.00 which worked completely fine
but for some reason the phone only has 1 bar of signal and no carrier or network, which enables us from getting onto cydia as it requires the internet which now doesn’t work :/
So we put the phone in DFU/recovery mode and tried to do a number of different updates via itunes which were unsuccessful, and now the phone is Stuck in Recovery Mode and wont turn on. It just comes up with the itunes logo and a USB wanting us to connect to itunes. When we do that, it says we need to restore it to connect with itunes, but itunes cant restore it, it comes up with errors. e.g (Error 6000)
What can we do to fix this? be able to use the internet via data roaming on his o2 network to download ultrasn0w which then hopefully unlocks the network so he can use his iphone with an Optus sim card. but firstly get the phone out of recovery mode and working again.
