Does iOS 3.1.2 to 4.0.2 Upgrade need Original Sim to Activate

Hi,

I have a factory unlocked iPhone 3GS (model MC132ZA, I used an Airtel sim card to initially activate my phone in India, now I am using a different sim card in a different country. Do I need my old sim card to activate my iPhone once again after I upgrade to 4.0.2.

    I have an iphone 4 but it has no sim, i have been told that without the original sim it can never work with any other sim! Can anyone tell me if this is true or how i can get the iphone to work with any sim? Thanks
