When Apple TV first became reality, it was classed, by Apple, as merely a “hobby”. Although they are still saying that today, there does seem to be some evidence to suggest that, just maybe, Apple is taking the product a little more seriously than just a plaything. Rumors have been heard that the next software update will contain support for Bluetooth.
Around 12 months ago, a code was found within the iOS code-base for Apple TV that gave the impression this support would be available at some point, and now it looks as though the time has come. The new iOS for Apple TV beta release contains a previously non-existent Bluetooth menu and it will allow a wireless Bluetooth keyboard to be connected to the set, eliminating the use of the current infrared remote control.
Owners of Apple TV’s who also have a Mac will already be in possession of an Apple wireless Bluetooth keyboard and set up will be easy for them, being just a case of pairing up the keyboard with the TV, as you do with any Bluetooth device. Users will be able to move through TV menus just by using the keys and will be able to enter text with it instead of having to use the Apple Remote app from their iPad or iPhone.
At the moment, support is only for the keyboard and it is anybody’ guess as to whether any other devices will be supported in the future. In the meantime, though, it is great news for Apple TV users everywhere.
