Angry Birds is one of the most popular games ever to grace a mobile device. Released 3 years ago, the game has spawned a massive following with more than a billion downloads. The original game has been followed by several more, including Angry Birds Rio, Seasons and the recently released Angry Birds Star Wars, which jumped to the top of the US iPhone charts in less than 3 hours of its release.
Now, Rovio Entertainment, makers of the game have announced, by way of a press release, the launch of Angry Birds: The Movie in 2016. John Cohen, of Despicable Me and Ice Age fame has signed up as producer and David Maisel, previously Marvel Studios Chairman will be the executive producer. Rovio Entertainment have decided against forging a partnership with any major film studio instead opting to retain full control by producing and financing the 3-D CG animated film themselves.
While the game continues to grow in popularity, it remains to be seen if interest will wane in the next 3 years. If it continues to grow as it has then Rovio Entertainment can expect a huge box-office smash hit. If not, they may find themselves on the receiving end of some sharp-beaked missiles, in the proper tradition of their game.
