Here are few images taken with the new HDR feature we were talking about in latest iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 firmware released on 8th Sept 2010. These are user taken images as published by JailbreakMatrix blog. The difference in the pictures taken before and after HDR ON is just mind blowing . The difference in the image capturing quality is amazing.

Please let us know your views . If you have already upgraded to iOS 4.1 , and want to share your pictures on this blog taken with HDR feature ON , please mail your pictures to onetrickaday at gmail dot com .

Note : The software we are using here is called Pro HDR, available at the AppStore for 1.99. The new HDR feature on iOS 4.1 is supposed to take images using the same technique and give almost identical results , since it is using the same hardware to produce and process the images .

that’s not better quality, that’s just what happens when you adjust the aperture (smaller) on a camera, resulting it takes a lower shutter speed to give these images more exposure, making it more difficult to get a steady shot

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The HDR-feature probably uses more than one picture to merge into a very high dynamic picture giving you no blow outs nor any black areas that the iphone camera usually does. It combines one picture with longer ‘shutter time’ and one with shorter, giving you high detail in both very well lit up areas and underexposed areas. If it works smoothly in practice it will be awesome since the dynamic range of the iphones camera is pretty limited. Aperture and shutter times really has nothing to do with it at all. The HDR-feature gives pictures that the iphone out of the box just cant manage to do with the sensor used to capture the light through the lens. The feature is probably very slow to use in practice.

Well actually, the HDR option in 4.1 does not take any longer to take a picture, unlike proHDR which takes about 3-5seconds per image! so if you are wanting to capture something fast, then go with the 4.1, but if you want pro results, then spend the 30 seconds to take it with ProHDR.

30 seconds is way long to hold the iphone and keep your hand steady …

      • Ardeona says:

In reality, you only have to stay steady for about 5 seconds when ProHDR takes 2 images. Processing takes the additional time. The new built-in HDR functionality is better than the stock camera in situations requiring a quick shot; however ProHDR is far better, if you have the few seconds it takes to get your shot.

I have several iPhone shots on Flickr (search “Ardeona”) from ProHDR.

And no, no affiliation with the company, just a very happy user!

I tried this app, because I’m trying to learn to take better pictures. I have used twice and I know already, it’s a winner.

Well worth the petty 1.99 for this app. Amazing Pics. Takes a little longer to get your pic, but the quality is WELL worth it. And it’s not that hard to hold it steady while it takes 2 shots, then after that, it merges them and you don’t have to hold it steady for that to happen.

    Cheers.

    What total BS!

Those images have been streched as far as the detail can go and the colour has been adjusted (crudely) to get the supposed HDR on images shown above.
